Holographic printing and other ideas for packaging

Product packaging is a practical tool for transporting and protecting a product. But more than that, it’s a way to tell a story. It’s purpose is to entice a prospective consumer to buy, and to give them a snapshot of information about what’s inside. Holographic printing is one technique that’s proven to catch a consumer’s eye — it’s an impressive and striking effect that is bound to make your product stand out on the shelf.

But before you start your packaging design, there are three important questions you should ask.

    What is your product?

It sounds simple, but there’s more to it than you might think. What is the size of your product and what is it made from? Does your product require padding within the packaging?

Answering these questions can help you to decide the logistical requirements for your packaging. It will also inform the kind of material that your packaging should be made from, which can affect the design itself.

    Who is your consumer?

Perhaps the most important question for any business is who the consumer is. Are you selling to parents, or women, or children, or pet owners? Perhaps the person buying your product is environmentally conscious? What is their budget and how much would they typically spend on a product like yours?

The packaging should appeal to all of your consumer’s qualities, as well as answering a few simple questions for them. Holographic printing is one way to show that you have put real consideration into designing your packaging — it also gives people the impression of authenticity which makes them feel more confident about a product.

    How are people purchasing?

Will your product be sold in a store or online? If the product will need to be transported to the consumer then this should be taken into consideration and you should think about a sturdier packaging option.

For products that will be sold in a store you should opt for something eye-catching as it’s the consumer’s first experience of your product. It needs to grab their attention when surrounded by other products and packaging.

Next, you should think about the colours you want to use, as well as the fonts and your logo. You also need to decide the written copy and any imagery you want to include that best conveys what your product is all about. It’s a good idea to do some style research before you start designing your packaging so that you find a look and feel that best reflects your product.

If you’re unsure about what to do, you can speak to a professional designer in our in-house team who can advise you on how to approach the design process. They can also speak to you about holographic printing which can be applied to your product packaging.
